Regeneration Plan is submitted

A major milestone has been reached for Barry with the completion of a regeneration plan shaped by local people which will unlock investment for the town over the next decade.

Over the past 18 months residents’ views about their town and what could be improved have been collated, and together with public survey results and data provided to us by UK Government have helped to develop the Plan for Barry. The Regeneration Plan has now been submitted to UK Government, promising a better future for Barry.

Guided by a dynamic group of residents, business owners, and public servants, with input from hundreds of local people, the Barry Plan for Neighbourhoods will prioritise a vibrant town centre, safety and security in Barry, address the east-west divide, prioritise young people, and focus resources on areas with the most need. The Barry Plan for Neighbourhoods Board will seek to work with a range of partners to deliver improvements and invest in projects that will deliver better health and employment outcomes for residents as well as making Barry an even better place to live and work.

The £20 million for Barry Plan for Neighbourhoods is dedicated to making a long-term, positive difference to the town, and the Regeneration Plan will now be considered by the UK Government, while locally preparations are underway to start spending the money due to be released to the town next April. The Board and its funding are hosted by the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

The Chair of the Barry Plan for Neighbourhoods, David Stevens, local resident and former CEO of Admiral Group, said,

“We issued a call-out in August for volunteers to join thematic action groups to make a long-term, positive difference to the town, and the people of Barry did not disappoint.

“The Regeneration Plan reflects the creative and practical ideas that arose from the groups and reflects their own experience of life in Barry.

The Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Councillor Lis Burnett said,

“This is a plan developed by the people of Barry, for the people of Barry. Through this partnership, we now have an even stronger understanding of what matters most to the community and the changes they want to see.

“We look forward to continuing to work with residents, businesses and our partners to turn these shared priorities into real improvements for today, and for future generations.”

The Member of Parliament for the Vale of Glamorgan, Kanishka Narayan MP said,

“Barry’s future will be built by the people who know it best. This plan reflects their hopes for a stronger town centre, safer streets, better opportunities for young people and investment where it is needed most. I am excited for the work ahead as funding begins to reach Barry in 2026.”
